Mark Wade is a full time artist mostly known for painting extraordinary realistic replicas of enlarged album covers, but not exclusively. His work has been exhibited at The Saatchi Gallery, The Royal Albert Hall and The Barbican, as well as various public venues around London.
“I’ve always been fascinated by imagery from the 50s and 60s and in particular that of Jazz albums from that period. The typeface, the saturated colours and photography stir emotions in me, even influencing the clothes that I wear. My paintings are a direct interpretation of what I love”.
Mark's interest in the subcultures of music and their associated record sleeves led him to recognise that an album cover acts like a timeline of memories. Mark pays trubute to the photography and design of the record sleeve and paints an enlarged replica, capturing the nostalgia as an enhanced and embellished unique piece of art.
Mark hand paints and constructs the paintings into realistic 24”×24” enlarged 3-dimensional replicas of albums, as well as the occasional 7” single, capturing every meticulous detail, from the scuffed and creased edges, the ring wear and worn corners. To the authentic patina of the just visible paper inner sleeve, and hand painted titles and catalogue number on the spine.
Mark only paints an album once, thereby making the painting a unique investment piece of artwork and a one-off. He has sold his work internationally to buyers in the United States, Europe, Australia and the Far East, as well as collectors who have multiple pieces in their art collections.
